The Diocesan Academy of Religious and Historical Studies of the Holy Meteora announces the International Scientific Symposium “Monastic Habit in Lieu of the Purple: Sexcentenary of the Dormition of Hosios Joasaph Uroš Palaiologos, 1423-2023”, which will take place on Saturday 21st of October 2023 at HOTEL DIVANI METEORA. This interdisciplinary symposium aspires to illuminate less known aspects of the personage of Hosios Joasaph, the second founder of the Monastery of the Transfiguration, Great Meteoron, as well as the wider context in which the saint lived and acted. Researchers from different fields (hagiography, history, art history, etc.) will touch upon diverse subjects: from the spiritual prototypes of the Skete of Stagoi and Hesychasm in Meteora, to the saint’s familial background and the heirlooms associated with his life and work. The symposium will open with greetings by his Grace, the metropolitan of Stagoi and Meteora, Theokletos, the abbot of the Great Meteoron, archimandrite Nephon Kapsalis, the director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Trikala, Ms. Krystallia Mantzana, as well as representatives of the local authorities.
