Announcement of Postdoctoral Research Fellow for 2024-2025

The Diocesan Academy of Theological and Historical Studies of the Holy Meteora announces that Dr. Christos Tsatsoulis, a graduate of the University of Ioannina, has been selected for the position of postdoctoral fellow for the year 2024-2025. The topic of his research is titled “Prosopography of late medieval Thessaly based on the documents and inscriptions of the Meteora monasteries (14th – 16th century)”.

Dr. Tsatsoulis studied at the Department of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2000-2004). In 2010, he attained his Master’s degree from the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Ioannina. In 2022, he received his PhD in Byzantine History from the same department. For the completion of his doctoral dissertation, he received a four-year scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) after passing the written exams. As a doctoral candidate, he participated in the implementation of the research programs “Excellence II (Ἀριστεία ΙΙ)”, “The history supports the research and economic growth in under-developed regions: the donor and dedicatory inscriptions in the Christian monument of Epirus (4th-18th c.)”, and “Prosopography of Medieval Epirus (4th – 15th century)”. He has participated in international scientific conferences. His studies have been published in international scientific journals and collective volumes. His interests focus on the research and study of Byzantine seals, the administrative system of the Byzantine Empire, the Byzantine economy, and Byzantine and post-Byzantine portraiture.

Brief description of the research:
By studying anthroponyms, it is possible to reconstruct the image that the Byzantines and other nations had of medieval Thessaly and specifically of the Meteora region, and the people who lived and created in this geography. The aim of the research is to record individuals based on the following criteria: a) their relevance to the area, and b) their horizontal and vertical social integration into groups. Simultaneously, the sources will be classified based on the quality of the relevant information. This methodological framework facilitates the understanding of the human geography of the area. The research will also utilize the published documents of the Meteora monasteries, from the editions of Veis and Sofianos, as well as the published inscriptions of the Meteora monuments and relics. Names found in notes and memoirs will be indexed and listed alphabetically. Each name will be accompanied by a reference to its role, a chronology, and a complete bibliographical citation.
